It consists of two major islands, Antigua and Barbuda, and a number of smaller islands (including Great Bird, Green, Guiana, Long, Maiden and York Islands and further south, the island of Redonda). Lying in the Eastern Caribbean's Leeward Islands, the English-speaking, two-island state of Antigua and Barbuda is a favoured tourist destination affectionately referred to as the 'Land of 365 Beaches'.
It has an estimated population of 102,012. The capital and largest port and city is St. John's on Antigua, with Codrington being the largest town on Barbuda. Having gained independence from Britain in 1981, Antigua and Barbuda has developed a reputation for judicial and governmental stability.
